Philosophically, mercantilism died with the publication of Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations in 1776. Sadly, in policy circles it has been resurrected over and over by all manner of vested interests and their friends in the ideological world of ‘public interest’ advocacy. The fact is that free trade frees people: it enables all to improve their lives and has the potential to eliminate poverty.
